Lit Review – Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Hey all! Today I want to share a quick review and recommendation for The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid.  Perfect for fans of movies, Old Hollywood, or a good love story with a twist, SHoEH features a cast of characters who made sure putting the book down was difficult.  It was a quick read, over a couple of afternoons.  I also recently finished Hollywood on Netflix (so now I guess this is also a TV review and rec!) so the Tinseltown of old has been in the forefront of my entertainment recently.  I don’t think reading and watching them consecutively is necessary, but I would be lying if I said it didn’t add to the enjoyment.

Anyway, without giving too much away, Monique Grant is an up and coming writer with a magazine who is requested specifically by Hollywood legend Evelyn Hugo to write a story, ostensibly about the auction of her most memorable gowns.  By the end of their first meeting, Evelyn has revealed that she actually wants Monique to write her life story.  When Monique questions why Evelyn has chosen her, Evelyn lays out the events of her own life in response.

More than just a tale of the glamour of old Hollywood as well as the dark side of fame, it’s a look at the sacrifices we make for our dreams, and for the ones we love.  Evelyn’s story was entertaining reading, and Taylor Jenkins Reid books continue to lengthen my TBR list.  Don’t forget to check your local library or independent bookstore for a copy, and have a listen to the podcast for other lit reviews!
