Off the recommendation of a friend, I picked up the book Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. My friend said this book was “charming and lovely!”
And she was not wrong!
This book is about love. All the messy emotions – heartache, excitement, the highs, the lows – of being love.
Meet Alex. Alex is the son of the first woman President of the United States. With his sister June, and the Vice President’s daughter, Nora, the three of them make up the White House Trio. All in their 20s, they are trendsetters, they hold lavish fundraiser parties, the world is fascinated by them.
Meet Henry. Henry is the Prince of England. He is just as popular, in his own right, as the White House Trio.
Alex and Henry have been rivals since their first meeting in 2016. It didn’t go well. There was a misunderstanding and since then there has been a strong dislike for each other.
When the President and family are invited to England to attend a royal wedding, Alex gets drunk, has a small altercation with Henry, and manages to upend the $75,000 wedding cake. The PR teams of both countries step in and arrange a weekend of staged appearances for Alex and Henry to show the world they are best buds.
What starts out as staged, turns into a new understanding of each other. And for Alex, an understanding of himself.
This book is just delightful. I hope you give it a try.
