Recently I indulged in a satisfying mystery in the form of the new offering from Ruth Ware. One by One is the story of a work retreat gone really, really wrong. Intended to be a gathering of colleagues working on a super popular (read: lucrative) app which links together music lovers, the trip takes a nightmarish turn when one of their coworkers disappears and then an avalanche strands them in their rental chalet at the top of a mountain. The stranding isn’t the worst part. The worst part is that people keep getting murdered.
The title points to the picking off of team members, one by one, even as safety measures are put into place; and alliances are challenged as suspicion passes from one person to the next. We have reason to believe any one of the teammates could be harboring murderous intentions. It was fun to play along and guess whodunnit, even if I was wrong more than once.
Ruth Ware hit my radar with The Woman in Cabin 10, which I also enjoyed. I know I’m not alone there. I’ve read all but one of hers now, I think. I enjoyed One by One more than The Lying Game and The Turn of the Key, but it was on par with The Death of Mrs. Westaway and …Cabin 10 for me. I appreciate that I don’t always see the twist coming in her books, and that they are suspenseful enough to keep me reading past my bedtime, but they don’t keep me from falling asleep. Give this one a go if you have enjoyed her previous stories.
The alcohol consumption in this one was pretty high, but the ski resort setting made me think a hot toddy would be a just right companion for the story.
