Festival Drinks

Hey all!

Kelley and I took advantage of a sunny fall afternoon here and visited a couple of local establishments participating in the new Grand Raven Festival in downtown Farmington.  We worked up a thirst checking out all the ‘ravencrows’ around town and then we sat on patios in the weak but warmish sunshine and sipped on two delightful creations.

First up, “The Raven” at Sidecar Slider Bar.  This flavorful drink featured #DeepEddyVodka, and was absolutely delicious.  I kind of hope they leave it on their menu.  I had a vodka epiphany this summer, and am finding so many more drinks that I enjoy because I’m no longer avoiding vodka combos.  The epiphany was this…if you only drank crappy vodka when you were in college, and it never tasted good, you should try a better vodka when you are older.  It turns out, when you don’t buy vodka that costs $5 for a half gallon, it’s actually pretty good.

Second, we sampled “The Hot Moddy” at the Farmington Brewing Company.  They mixed Mead, spices and hot water to create a sweet, cool-weather-defeating sipper that was just perfect as the sun was beginning to set.  I had never tried Mead, which I learned was fermented honey, before and was anticipating a little more sweetness in the drink, but our server explained that the spices they use really offset that and he was right…it was well balanced and a nice alternative to their cold beers (which are also delicious) on a cool day. My go-to warmer when I don’t feel well is a n/a version of this drink, but I might make the switch, you know, to feel better faster.

Recently, the City Council voted to create an outdoor social district so people can continue to support local businesses as the Coronavirus holds on in Michigan.  So, here’s hoping we can enjoy these, and the other Raven Cocktail Crawl creations into the winter.
